Prospective Transfer Students from Schools other than an NC Community College

Appalachian State University accepts many transfer students from other colleges and universities in North Carolina as well as out of state institutions. Careful planning can help the transition to ASU go as smoothly as possible. While it may not be possible for every course taken at another institution to count as a required course at Appalachian, early planning can increase the chances that most courses taken will count towards degree requirements at Appalachian.

Please refer to the following information as a guide in determining courses likely to transfer to Appalachian. Please keep in mind that requirements and policies may change:

Admission to Appalachian

Read about the requirements for admission to the Walker College of Business. The earliest a transfer student can be admitted to the College of Business is after the first semester because he/she must establish a GPA of 2.5 based on a minimum of 12 graded hours at ASU prior to admission.

Learn About General Education at Appalachian

Read about the General Education Program at Appalachian and review the General Education check sheet [PDF]. Please carefully read the information about how courses are to be selected in the perspectives. If you are planning to pursue a business major at Appalachian, you should try to complete a theme in the "Historical and Social" Perspective that has the ECO 2030 course so that you can count it in both the business major and in the General Education Program. If you are majoring in International Business or planning to pursue a foreign language minor at Appalachian, you should try to complete a theme in the Local to Global Perspective that contains a foreign language course numbered 1050 or 1060 (if the language you will be pursuing is represented in that theme). The math course required for business majors is MAT 1030.

Review Requirements for your Intended Major

Review the checksheet for the major you intend to pursue. If you are attending an AACSB accredited university, you may find courses at your school that will transfer to Appalachian as upper level courses required in your major (see the note in the adjacent column about the Walker College of Business policy regarding transfer credit for 3000/4000 level business courses). Courses must be approved by the appropriate academic department chair in order to count as a 3000/4000 level business courses at Appalachian.

Check for Course Equivalencies

Use Appalachian's Course Equivalency Search webpage to determine how courses at your institution may transfer to Appalachian . Try to take courses that may fulfill the General Education requirements and the requirements for admission to the College of Business. Keep in mind that course equivalencies may change. Your official articulation of transfer credit will be evaluated upon admission to Appalachian State University.

Basic Computer Skills Proficiency Test

Determine whether or not you will need to take the Basic Computer Proficiency Test (required for admission to the COB). If you have equivalent credit for CIS 2025, you do not have to take the test. If you do need to take the test, you should register online for the first available test date after you are admitted to Appalachian (or the first one you are able to attend after admission to Appalachian). This test must be taken on campus. It is important to take this test by the end of your first term at Appalachian. Online registration is available during designated times through the Department of Computer Information Systems.
