Common Registration Problems with Business Courses
The following are common error messages students get when attempting to register for business classes. If you are getting one of these messages, the explanations below may help you to understand why:
A message that you have already taken all the 3000/4000 level business courses you can take prior to admission to the College of Business
The College of Business has a policy that no more than five business courses at the 3000/4000 level can be registered for and taken by students who are not admitted to the COB. Occasionally, a student will be required to take more than five 3000/4000 level business courses for a non-business major and/or business minor/concentration. In these cases, the student must get assistance with registering for these classes from the College of Business Advising Center in 2126 Raley Hall. This policy cannot be waived for business majors - even if they expect to be admitted to the COB at the end of the current semester.
"Campus Restriction"
Courses with section numbers beginning with "3" (i.e. 350, 351, etc.) are reserved for students in Distance Education cohorts."
"Class Restriction"
This means the student does not have the required classification to take the course. For example, students must have junior status (60 earned hours) to take 3000 level business courses (with the exception of the 3000 level business core courses, which require 57 earned hours) and senior status (90 earned hours) to take 4000 level business courses.
"Closed Section"
When a business class is closed, you cannot add that class unless you get the permission of the academic department. Students should direct requests to add a closed business class to the departments or academic representatives listed below. THE COB ADVISING CENTER CANNOT OVERRIDE A CLOSED CLASS WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF THE ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT OR REPRESENTATIVE. Once permission is given, the department will enter the override and the student should then go back to his/her AppalNet account to register for the class.

"Prerequisite and Test Score Error"
This usually has nothing to do with a test score and often has to do with a prerequisite that is not a course. In addition to prerequisite courses, some common prerequisites for business courses that can generate this message are as follows:
- Students must have a 2.0 to take any 3000/4000 level business course (unless already admitted to the COB) - new transfer students with no established GPA and students already admitted to the COB can get that prerequisite waived in COB Advising.
- Students must have 57 hours (earned or in progress) to take 3000 level business core courses (FIN 3680, MGT 3630, MKT 3050 and POM 3650).
- ENG 3100 or BE 3340 with a minimum grade of "C" is required prior to taking any 4000 level business course. This prerequisite is waived for non-business majors.
- Students must have 24 hours (earned or in progress) to take ACC 2100.
- Students must have the COB Honors Program designation to register for any business course with a "410" section number.
"Time Conflict with CRN XXXXX"
This often happens if a student is trying to register for two online courses. The message will indicate the other course with which there is a time conflict. The COB Advising Center can put in a permit to override the time conflict for a business course but not for non-business courses. If there is a genuine time conflict, permits to override it can only be given with the written approval of both instructors. If the error is due to two classes being online, the COB Advising Center can give overrides for the business course with no approvals needed.
Registration Issues Encountered by Non-Business Majors
Non-business majors who need to take 4000 level business courses will always need an override from the College of Business Advising Center for the prerequisite of a minimum grade of "C" in either ENG 3100 or BE 3340 (unless they have taken one of these courses and earned the minimum grade.
Non-business majors who are required to take more than five business courses at the 3000/4000 level will always need assistance in registering for any business courses in excess of five from the College of Business Advising Center.
Registration Issues Encountered by New Transfer Students
Since 3000/4000 level business courses require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, all new transfer students (who have no established GPA) will need to contact the College of Business Advising Center for an override for this prerequisite. Although a permit is given to override this prerequisite during early registration, students will be removed from the course if a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 is not earned at the end of the first semester.
