Taking Courses Elsewhere

To register for classes at another school (community college or other four year school), you need to do the following:

  • Obtain a summer school schedule from the school you plan to attend and decide what course(s) you will take.
  • Fill out a "Visiting Course Request Form". The form is available at the Office of Transfer Articulation in the JET Building.
  • List on the form any courses you may take at the other school
  • If you are trying to get credit for courses at the 3000 level or above, you must get the written approval of the departmental chairperson.
  • On your completed form, the Office of Transfer Articulation will indicate how the courses you've planned will be credited at ASU.

The form is then sent to the area maintaining your advising record (University College or, if you have declared your major, the degree granting college). Permission is granted if you will have met the prerequisites, are in good academic standing (and, for 3000/4000-level business courses, have the approval from the department chairperson). Please note that approval does not indicate that you need the course.

A copy of the permission form is sent to the school you plan to attend. You are responsible for asking the other school to send a transcript to the Office of Transfer Articulation at ASU when you complete the course(s). There may be a charge for this service.

Reminders

  • Grades earned at other schools do not transfer - only credits transfer.
  • Appalachian does not accept transfer courses with grades below "C".
  • If you need to repeat a course and want to exclude the initial grade, you must take the repeat at ASU. You cannot use the repeat substitution rule for course work taken elsewhere.
  • Use the ASU equivalency course search to assist you with determining how courses at another school will count at ASU (this resource does not typically include equivalents to most 3000/4000 level courses..

FAQ

Can I pre-register for a business course at ASU if I will be taking the prerequisite at a different school in the summer?
Yes, but you will have to register for such courses in the COB Advising Office (2126 Raley) and you will be dropped from the course(s) if you do not provide the COB Advising Office with written proof that you successfully completed the course prerequisite (i.e.. transcript, grade report, etc.) before the first day of class (you must also separately send a copy of your transcript from the other school to the ASU Registrar's Office).
